It’s hard to know where to start with this trip.
First of all, if it weren’t for generous donors, I don’t think I could have enjoyed it or been at peace about it in the way that I was.
Second, if so many students were not going (from 4 med schools & 1 dental school), I probably would not have gone. Rocky Vista COM in both Parker, CO and Ivens, UT had representatives, as did Calif. Health Sciences University in Fresno, Lee COM in the east and south areas, and Louisville Dental school (the student was admitted the month after we got home).
Third, Angelica & George Gonzalez are absolutely amazing leaders. I know they kept our team from so many details that we did not need to worry about and could have stressed over; they modeled leadership, compassion, professionalism, and peace that I can only hope to achieve some day.
Fourth, so many people prayed as I truly did not know whether I would be going on this trip until 2 hours before I was supposed to be at the airport. 8 days prior to leaving Caleb & Katie got married (which was one of the best weddings I’ve ever attended, honestly–granted, I might be biased), but then 2 days before leaving, Sherry called with the statement:
No, she was not pregnant, but it was similar. Our two foster boys were coming back to our home to live with us after an incident left them without caretakers.
How could I possibly leave her and the girls with these two rascals? It was scary, sad, brought back so many emotions, and was jarring because I did not have a framework to place this situation. Do I stay or go? Obviously I went, but that was looming while there. It was disconcerting to some degree, but to another it was what it was. Plus, I was so tired that I didn’t have much time to dwell on the situation with the boys!
The trip was amazing. Over 1,200 patients were seen by healthcare professions with services like ultrasound, pharmacy, physical therapy, dental, optometry, general practice, and even a spontaneous outpatient surgery. I had the opportunity to do a pastor’s gathering for 3 days with 7 church leaders. I could go on and on about that trip. If you care to know more, I’d love to share. 125 people came to faith in Jesus for the first time, which is clearly the most long-lasting result!
Pastor-training
was really great! I was informed there’d be a pastor’s conference where I’d be speaking to 5-8 pastors. In total we say seven male pastors and three of their wives in attendance. I was so glad for the couples that came.
When I say “pastor training,” I use that phrase unlike you may think one would use it. When I hear training, I think of pre-set curriculum, a topic, and an expectation of guests knowing what is awaiting them before the event. I brought some curriculum but wanted to ask them what they needed before giving them some pre-established curriculum.
“What is your greatest need in this area?” That was my first question. Without hesitancy they said they needed unity amongst the pastors …
