It was the highlight of the summer, by far! Spending time in the gorgeous country outside Buena Vista, CO with Sherry, healthcare professionals’ families, military families, and others was an experience of a lifetime. The family camp was truly a haven where people came together as a unified, diverse family. What made it even more special was the fact that we were not only included but also warmly welcomed, despite being newcomers.
Each year Spring Canyon hosts a Medical Week for healthcare professionals to gather together. I cannot encourage our CMDA members enough to consider attending for one, if not many years. The retreat center hosted people from all over the country; not just Coloradans filled its premises. From the Lone Star State of Texas, to the rolling hills of Tennessee, the stunning landscapes of upstate New York, the picturesque beauty of Oregon, the vibrant city of Albuquerque, and even the far reaches of Kenya, there was an incredible mix of origins among the attendees. The camp had a cozy atmosphere, with around 60-70ish people of all ages, but it could certainly accommodate many more.
This close-knit gathering offered a unique opportunity to bond with individuals from various backgrounds who shared a commonality in Christ. Many connections were made, and the kind we could probably pick up where we left off. The days were filled with laughter, fun activities, and heartfelt conversations. Whether we hiking in the breathtaking wilderness, horseback riding, fishing, drawing/painting, or simply sharing meals and stories around the fire pit, there was an undeniable sense of camaraderie that permeated every moment. There was even a great amount of free time. It was not over-progammed, as some camps/retreats have been. There was little FOMO (fear of missing out) because you had to pick between multiple events.
The beauty of the camp’s location at 7,000 ft. altitude added to the experience. Surrounded by nature’s wonders, we were able to appreciate the tranquility and serenity that the stunning landscape provided. The crisp mountain air, the majestic mountains in the distance, and the vibrant colors of wildflowers blooming in the meadows all contributed to the overall sense of awe and wonder. And the ongoing spring that fed the entire camp was not sy of miraculous.
The discussions revolved around marriage – a subject that I haven’t had the opportunity to address during a conference or retreat before! The Colorado Springs CMDA chapter graciously hosted Sherry and me, covering all expenses for her. It was a truly fulfilling experience, especially considering the challenging period we went through after the loss of our foster boys.
One of my desires has been to see retreats/conferences in each of the areas in our region. I am so grateful to have this opportunity in the mountain area for healthcare professionals. As I look back upon those precious days in the captivating Colorado countryside, I can’t help but feel a sense of deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of experiences we encountered.
But do I have to be military?
Nope. That was my fear, too, but anyone is welcome and I did not even know who was or was not military. I can’t encourage you to consider the Medical Week at Spring Canyon, the last full week of July each year!
