Taking a Spiritual History: Good Medicine for Patient & Professional?

CMDA Western Student Leaders – below is a speaker opportunity I strongly encourage you to consider hosting.

About Bob Mason

Bob Mason serves with Medical Strategic Network and Cru, and is adjunct faculty at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and the Family Medicine Director of Spiritual Care Training at Loma Linda University Health. He frequently speaks to student and professional groups about whole-person care with patients. Bob’s approach is from a Christian perspective and helps Christian healthcare students understand how to care for patients’ spiritual needs in a professional, ethical and patient-centered manner.  Using both peer reviewed studies and biblical principles, his engagement has been helpful to many.

For the past few years, he’s done presentations at numerous health science campuses across the US including Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, Midwestern University, University of Indiana, Rocky Vista University, Morehouse, Harvard, Case Western, Washington University, Northwestern, University of Colorado, Western, Howard, UCLA, Touro Nevada, University of Southern California, and many others.

One of many talks he can offer

A title that has seemed to work well is “Taking a Spiritual History: Good Medicine for Patient and Professional?”  This topic has drawn diverse student and professional audiences representing various professional fields, faiths, non-faith individuals, and atheists.  Response to this lecture has been most positive.  At many campuses, a breakfast or lunch meeting with food served has worked well.  Oftentimes, the Christian students later report that the session facilitated positive conversations about faith between them and their classmates.  More, it can be something to which other schools such as pharmacy, nursing, allied health, etc. can be invited.

I heard Bob speak in 2026 in Montana.  His teaching changed not only my perspective on integration, but even changed how I ask questions, emphasize the importance of whole person care, and lean into taking a spiritual history without hesitation.

Here’s a way you could announce it to your student body or CMDA members …

CMDA is sponsoring a lunch lecture “Taking a Spiritual History: Good Medicine for Patients and Professionals?”  Peer reviewed research shows when spirtual care is a component of medical care, outcomes improve, patient satisfaction increases and in some situations the cost of healthcare declines.

Bob Mason, MDiv has addressed this issue on numerous health science campuses across the US including Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, Midwestern University, University of Indiana, Rocky Vista University, Morehouse, Harvard, Case Western, Washington University, Northwestern, University of Colorado, Western, Howard, UCLA, Touro Nevada, University of Southern California, and many others.
